In view of the resource constraints at present, it is difficult to expand this activity by setting up more such units in the country. In this background it was realised that the involvement of NonGovernmental Organisations (NGOs), Home Science Colleges etc. interested in taking up nutrition education activities in their respective areas Would go a long way in creating a multiplier effect in this important field of activity.
Objectives
The basic objective is to enlarge the scope and area of operations of the Nutrition Education and Extension activities by involving NGOs, Home Science Colleges etc. It is envisaged that NGOs with some technical and financial Support from the Ministry will be able to undertake Nutrition Education and Extension activities in their respective areas, thus, creating nutritional awareness among the masses and improving their nutritional status.

The NGOs which are already engaged in Nutrition and health promotion activities and have adequate infrastructure to undertake Such activities would be inducted for undertaking Nutrition Education and Extension activities on the lines undertaken by the field units of the FNB in their respective areas with modest financial and technical support from the Ministry.

At the first instance, the Ministry Would sanction a sum of Rs. 12,000.00 only - Rs. 7,000.00 for procuring the demonstration kit and Rs. 5,000.00 as advance to incur an expenditure on organisation of nutrition demonstration programmes. The proposed amount would be provided through the regional Dy. Technical Adviser (s) of the Ministry. Thereafter, the NGO would draw the programme schedule for three months in advance and Submit the same to the regional DTA for seeking the sanction of the amount. As regards the technical support, the Ministry would provide
Necessary educational/training material.The field functionaries /volunteers of the concerned Organisation would be given orientation training by the field units of the Ministry through Integrated Nutrition Education Camps/Orientation Training Courses specially organised for this purpose. Training programmes are also arranged at State level training institutions/Home Science Colleges. The Ministry would also maintain a close liaison with the Organisation through field officers who would help monitor the activities undertaken by the volunteers/ field functionaries of respective agencies.

Communication Strategy
The agents of communication Would be the field functionaries/ volunteers of the concerned NGOs, Home Science Colleges etc. Nutrition Education would be imparted through group discussions, practical demonstrations, meetings and exhibitions followed by slide/film/video shows.
The meetings of the beneficiaries would be held at common meeting place in a village or an urban slum which would be attended by the local women, adolescent girls and other members of the community. The areas to be adopted for Undertaking Nutrition Education activities would be decided in consultation with the Ministry through the regional DTAs.

Content of the Educational Package
The educational package would include simple messages presented in local language on various aspects of Food, Nutrition and Health like :-
- functional significance of malnutrition;
- some basic facts about food and nutrition & improving diet at low cost; -
Nutritional needs of different age groups;
- Nutrition of expectant and nursing mothers;
- Promotion of breast-feeding;
- Infant feeding-preparation of instant infant Foods and Supplementary Foods;
- Nutrition of pre-schoolers, school children and adolescents; - Management of diarrhoea;
- Importance of immunization;
- Principles of hygiene and sanitation; - Conservation of nutrients during food
preparation;
- Home scale preservation of fruits & vegetables; and
- Existing nutrition, health & welfare services.
Development and Production of Educational material
Depending on the local needs, the designated agencies can develop and produce suitable educational/training material for nutrition education activities within the amount allocated for the purpose.
Monitoring and Evaluation
Monitoring is essential to ensure that the scheme is being implemented on the desired lines. It also helps in identifying the problems and taking suitable corrective measures in time. For this purpose, the NGOs/Home Science Colleges Would be required to submit their monthly reports/returns to the Regional DTAs.

Terms and conditions for `Networking Project'The Organisation would undertake nutrition education & extension activities in selected areas and create nutritional awareness among the people for improving their nutritional status;Nutrition education activities would be carried out more or less on the lines undertaken by the field units of FNB; 3. The area to be covered by the concerned Organisation would be clearly Split out and finalised in consultation with the Department with a view to achieve an effective impact on the community; 4. The recurring expenditure for organising one nutrition education and demonstration programme amounting to Rs. 150/- is inclusive of all expenditure connected with the Organisation of the programme Such as expenditure on purchase of raw food material for demonstration purposes, fuel, transportation and honorarium to the workers, if any:4 5. The Organisation would plan the nutrition education activities for three months in advance and submit the estimated expenditure to the regional Deputy Technical Adviser of the Department for seeking the sanction of the amount; 6. The accounts of the project shall be maintained separately. Reports on progress of expenditure will be sent quarterly. The account hook on the implementation of the project shall be open to be checked by an officer of the Government deputed by the Ministry. The accounts shall be sent to the Department annually. 7. The financial assistance shall be utilised for the purpose for which it is sanctioned and in the stipulated time schedule. The Organisation shall not divert any portion of the fund received, for any other purpose. 8. The organisation shall furnish, every quarter, progress, of expenditure on the funds received up to the end of the previous, quarter along with a progress report on the implementation of the project. Release of further instalments of fund shall be made on receipt of Such reports. 9. The Organisation shall furnish a Utilisation certificate in the enclosed proforma on the funds received every year within 6 months of the closing of the financial year.
